Washington: Local Officials Seeking to Outlaw Waterfowl Hunting at Deer Lagoon!

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Please Contact the Members of the Island County Commission Today!

Next week, the Island County Commission will consider a proposal that would impose a total ban on shooting at Deer Lagoon.  Hunters at Deer Lagoon have an impeccable safety record and have protected this important waterfowl habitat for decades.  This prohibition would end waterfowl hunting, a popular and established tradition in Deer Lagoon.

Commissioners have reported that they will base any restrictions on the “reasonable likelihood” that hunters will endanger people, their domestic animals or property.  This is apparently based solely on the reported fears of some property owners in the area.  The unfounded and physics-defying complaints have prompted Commissioners John Dean and Angie Homola to endorse a ban.

A similar ban was proposed on Leque Island just a few years ago, which lies just 18 miles to the north of Deer Lagoon.  The same whimsical and emotional arguments were made, but a massive turnout of hunters and sportsmen at the public hearing put a swift end to the anti-hunting agenda.

A public hearing will be held on Monday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Freeland Hall located at 1515 Shoreview Drive, Freeland, WA 98249There is little doubt that anti-gun, animal “rights,” and anti-hunting forces will be active in making their voices heard, so it is vital that gun owners and sportsmen speak loudly.  Public hunting land is being eroded and all hunters/sportsmen need to unite and protect what remains.

Please make plans to attend this hearing and make your voices heard!  If you are unable to attend, please contact the members of the Island County Commission TODAY and respectfully urge them to oppose this attack on our hunting heritage and Second Amendment rights.  Contact information for the commissioners can be found below.
