New Jersey: More Gun Control Measures Up For Senate Vote

New Jersey: More Gun Control Measures Up For Senate Vote

Tomorrow, the New Jersey Senate will vote on a couple of bills that once again attack the state’s law-abiding gun owners while ignoring the state’s violent crime problem.

Earlier this year, Governor Chris Christie took the bold and unprecedented step in New Jersey to expand the justifiable need standard to make it easier for law-abiding citizens to obtain a concealed carry permit.  This incremental improvement would expand the state’s standard to include more general “serious threats,” rather than the state’s current standard which is almost impossible to meet.  Since then, anti-gun lawmakers have been scrambling to do everything in their power to block that effort.  SCR 117, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-37), would reject the state police’s rule change with respect to “justifiable need.”  Clearly, Sen. Weinberg doesn’t believe in self-defense for ordinary citizens.  The few permits issued in New Jersey have been reserved for the rich and famous and politically connected.  While state lawmakers enjoy armed security protection, anti-gun politicians in Trenton have abandoned ordinary citizens.

S.152, sponsored by Senator Fred Madden (D-4), would criminalize possession of the SS190AP (armor-piercing) round for the FN Five-Seven handgun.  This ammunition is already banned under existing federal and state law:

18 U.S.C. 922(a)(7) and (8) prohibit the manufacture or import of armor-piercing ammunition, and N.J.S. 2C:39-3f bans armor-piercing ammunition.

The round is not even available to civilians.  In other words, this legislation is redundant and unnecessary.

Please contact your state Senator and respectfully ask him/her to vote against these bills.  Remind them that you support a law-abiding citizen’s right to carry and right to self-defense.
