Virginia: Pro-Gun Bills on the Move in the General Assembly

With the help of NRA members across the Commonwealth, Senate Bill 1299 passed out of the Senate with bipartisan support and will now head to the House of Delegates.  While Senate Bill 1300 is still pending consideration by the full Senate, companion bills for both SB 1299 and SB 1300 are headed to the House floor in the form of HB 1852 and HB 1853.  It is important that NRA members and Second Amendment supporters contact their state Senator in support of SB 1300 and your Delegate in support of HB 1852 and HB 1853.

Senate Bill 1299, sponsored by state Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel, as well as House Bill 1852, sponsored by Delegate C. Todd Gilbert, would allow any person who is 21 or older, not prohibited from purchasing, possessing, or transporting a firearm and who are currently protected by an unexpired protective order to carry a concealed handgun for 45 days after the protective order was issued. This would provide time for the victim to apply for their concealed carry permit.  Additionally, Senate Bill 1300 and House Bill 1853 are moving through the legislative process and would provide funding for reimbursement of training expenses as well as information for those individuals seeking training under the protection of a protective order.

Senate Bill 1023, sponsored by state Senator Richard Stuart, has passed the Senate and is now awaiting committee referral in the House of Delegates. This legislation would prohibit the sharing of information regarding Virginia concealed handgun permits (CHP) with law enforcement in states that do not recognize Virginia CHPs.  SB 1023 would also require the Department of State Police to maintain and publish an online list of states that recognize a Virginia concealed handgun permit.  Your NRA-ILA will keep you informed when this bill will be up for a vote in the House Militia Policing and Public Safety Committee.

Thanks to NRA members contacting committee members in both chambers, multiple anti-gun bills that threaten your Second Amendment rights have been defeated.  These bills included unnecessary measures to expand background checks on all private sales, including family members and bills that directly violated your right to self-defense and due process.  Again, please click the “Take Action” button above to contact your state legislators in support of the above pro-gun bills.
