You Stepped Up: Bloomberg’s Latest Gun Control Bill HB 548 Tabled in Committee

House Judiciary Committee Votes Down Latest Attempt to Re-Brand HB 50 on a 7-6 Vote

On Monday evening, the House Judiciary Committee voted to table New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg and State Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard's HB 548, the latest version of gun control legislation being pushed by out-of-state interests.  New Mexico gun owners and sportsmen stepped up, flooding the Roundhouse with emails and phone calls in opposition to this measure, outnumbering advocates for the bill at Monday's hearing, and showing that they won't be fooled by attempts to bring new restrictive proposals forward at the 11th hour of the legislative session.

HB 548, would have required that all online firearms sales and transfers taking place at gun shows be conducted through a federal firearm licensed dealer (FFL), which would involve extensive paperwork, a background check and an undetermined fee.  The six Republicans on the committee -- Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R-Carlsbad), Rep. Zach Cook (R-Ruidoso), Rep. Jim Dines (R-ABQ), Rep. Nate Gentry (R-ABQ), Rep. Greg Nibert (R-Roswell) and Rep. Bill Rehm (R-ABQ) -- were joined by Democrat Eliseo Lee Alcon from Milan on the vote to table the measure.  On Tuesday morning, HB 548 was pulled off the table and referred to the House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee.

There are just four days left in session, which ends at noon on Saturday, March 18.  Your NRA-ILA will be watching closely for any attempt to revive HB 548 and bring it to the full House for consideration, or for any movement on SB 48, the Senate companion bill which is currently pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
