On September 16 Reuters revealed that in the midst of the September 11 hijackings, President Bush had ordered U.S. fighter pilots to shoot down any airliner acting in a suspicious manner. What has been utterly incomprehensible is that the federal government considers destroying a hijacked airliner, and thereby killing every single passenger, more palatable than allowing the arming of pilots or passengers.
