This "mission statement" appears at the bottom of every New York Times Co. press release: "The Company`s core purpose is to enhance society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality news, information and entertainment." To "enhance society," publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. officiated over an aggressive affirmative-action program that first elevated and then protected reporter Jayson Blair — a mistake that has forever tarnished the 152-year old newspaper. But the "enhance society" end justifies even Blair`s fraudulent means. After all, the mission statement specifically calls for "creating" news. And isn`t that exactly what Blair did?
