Maine: Judiciary Committee to Hear Important Handgun Permit Confidentiality Legislation on Tuesday

Thursday, March 7, 2013

On Tuesday, March 12, the Maine Judiciary Committee will hear important Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) confidentiality legislation, Legislative Document 345.  LD 345, introduced by state Representative Corey Wilson (R-56) seeks to establish permanent privacy protection for CHP holders. Please attend this important public hearing at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 438 in the State House if you can.

It is imperative that the Maine General Assembly passes LD 345 given the recent Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) request from the Bangor Daily News to obtain the personal information—including the names, addresses and birthdates—of all CHP holders in Maine. There are also several instances nationally of anti-gun media outlets publishing similar information. Such publications place law-abiding gun owners at risk and jeopardize the safety of all Mainers by creating a map for criminals who may target the residences of CHP holders to steal firearms.

On February 19, temporary CHP confidentiality legislation was enacted into law, but this measure is only effective through April 30.

Please contact members of the Judiciary Committee TODAY and respectfully urge them to support a permanent solution for the confidentiality of all CHP holders in Maine. Contact information for members of this Committee is provided below:
