Louisiana: Committee Advances Critical Personal Protection Bill for Domestic Violence Victims

Louisiana: Committee Advances Critical Personal Protection Bill for Domestic Violence Victims

Earlier this month, House Bill 1155 passed the Louisiana House and was referred to Senate Judiciary C Committee.  The committee unanimously approved this important self-defense legislation on Tuesday morning and it now moves to the full Senate for final approval.  Please contact your state Senator and urge them to SUPPORT HB 1155 with no amendments when it comes up for a vote.

Sponsored by state Representative Valarie Hodges (R-Denham Springs), HB 1155 would provide expedited, temporary concealed carry permits for domestic violence victims who have obtained permanent protective orders against their abusers.  After a thorough background check, the Louisiana State Police will issue carry permits that are valid for 45 days to these individuals in order to provide immediate relief, after which the temporary permittee must complete the regular concealed carry training requirements before expiration in order to be granted a five-year carry permit.  HB 1155 recognizes that the most time-consuming part of the permit application process can be identifying a firearms instructor, scheduling a class and completing the requisite coursework -- time that victims of domestic violence often don't have.
