Michigan: Pro-Gun Legislation Introduced

This week, two pro-gun bills were introduced in the Michigan Legislature.

House Bill 4554, introduced by state Representative Lee Chatfield (R-107), would remove the pistol registration requirement and enables previously registered individuals to have their information stricken from records if they so desire within 14 days.  Gun registration and gun owner licensing doesn’t prevent or solve crime.  According to the Department of Justice, most criminals acquire guns through theft, the black market, or acquaintances.  Further, as reported by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, half of illegally trafficked firearms originate with straw purchasers who buy guns for criminals.

Senate Bill 366, introduced by state Senator Wayne Schmidt (R-37), would establish a provisional concealed carry permit for Michiganders 18-20 years of age.  These individuals can serve in our military, work in law enforcement, and even serve in public office, yet they are currently restricted in exercising their fundamental right to self-defense.  SB 366 would fix this discrepancy.
