As the U.N. Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty entered its second week of negotiations, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre addressed the conference and made the position of the NRA and American gun owners crystal clear: No treaty that includes civilian arms is acceptable. This speech is the culmination of nearly 20 years of NRA involvement in U.N. gun control issues in general, and the push for an Arms Trade Treaty in particular. Until 2009, the U.S. opposed the ATT. The Obama administration changed that position and agreed to move ahead with negotiations. Click "Read More" to read the full speech and the rest of the story.
Next week, the United States Senate will once again take up the latest version of the DISCLOSE Act, in yet another attempt to curtail the First Amendment rights of Americans. The bill, S. 3369, has been fast-tracked on the Senate calendar and is set for a vote on Monday, July 16. NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), as well as all members of the Senate, expressing the NRA's steadfast opposition to the legislation.
NRA is the largest pro-hunting organization in the world. Through programs, legislation, grant funding and publications, NRA efforts have strengthened the rich tradition of hunting for generations. As such, NRA is proud to partner with Seacat Creative to preview an elegant and authentic new hunting story: Searching for West. The high-tech film stars elk hunter and mountain athlete Mark Seacat. Seacat has long believed that the primal act of hunting is, at its core, quite beautiful, and now he and director Christopher Murphy think they’ve proven it.
In January 2011, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released its "Study on the Importability of Certain Shotguns." Using the unconstitutional and oft-abused "sporting purposes" test as justification, BATFE concocted a list of ten popular shotgun features and determined that "shotguns containing any of these features are not particularly suitable for nor readily adaptable to generally recognized sporting purposes." Guns with any of these features will therefore be prohibited from importation.
Oral arguments were heard this week in the United Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in the case of Jennings v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, in which the NRA is appealing a decision by a federal court in Texas, which held that the Second Amendment doesn't protect the right of young adults to buy firearms from federally licensed dealers.
