Mexican Drug Cartel Used "Fast and Furious" Gun in Failed Assassination Plot

Just when you think the news about the disastrous "Fast and Furious" gun-walking operation can't possibly get any worse, a U.S. government report has disclosed that Mexican drug cartel operatives used a firearm from the infamous scheme in a failed attempt to assassinate a high-ranking Mexican law enforcement official.

According to a recent Daily Caller article, the gun "was seized in Tijuana in connection with a drug cartel's conspiracy to kill the police chief of Tijuana, Baja California, who later became the Juárez police chief."

An August 6, El Paso Times article gives further details:

The firearm was found Feb. 25, 2010, during an arrest of a criminal cell associated with Teodoro "El Teo" García Simental and Raydel "El Muletas" López Uriarte, allies of the Sinaloa cartel.

Tijuana police said they arrested four suspects in March 2010 in connection with a failed attempt to take out Julián Leyzaola, and that the suspects allegedly confessed to conspiring to assassinate the police chief on orders from Tijuana cartel leaders.

The firearm in question was traced back to the "Fast and Furious" operation.

Mistaken Rifle Delivery Panics Some, but Highlights Real Problems for Gun Owners

A recent news story from Washington, D.C. highlights just how irrational anti-gun advocates can be about firearms.

A SIG semi-automatic rifle was mistakenly delivered to an address in the nation's capital. It was intended for a gun store in Pennsylvania, but appears to have been accidentally re-labeled in transit.

Upon opening the box, the recipient decided to take a picture of himself smiling as he stood over the rifle, though he later told a public radio reporter he was "shocked" to have the rifle in his kitchen. Of course, the unloaded rifle posed no threat, as no ammunition was on hand or even available to purchase in D.C.

Outrage of the Week: Up in Arms Against Safety?

This week's outrage comes to us from our nation's capital, where D.C.'s decidedly anti-gun mayor is apoplectic over a billboard ad placed last month by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

So what was it about the billboard ad that so raised the ire of D.C.'s mayor, Vincent Gray? Well, the billboard says "Hey D.C. -- It's time for your first shot," and features a picture of a woman holding a paper target. The billboard, which is simply an advertisement for NSSF's "First Shots" gun safety and training seminars, so incensed Mayor Gray that he called the sign "offensive" and "irresponsible."
