NEWS Bloomberg to Launch Proprietary Anti-Gun Media Arm
The ceaseless torrent of anti-gun commentary from the New York Times, Washington Post, MSNBC, and other “mainstream” media outlets, apparently isn’t enough for billionaire firearm prohibitionist Michael Bloomberg. On May 8, Capital reported that the ex-mayor of New York is developing a “news operation” to work alongside his Everytown for Gun Safety organization in furtherance of his megalomaniacal gun control agenda. |
LEGAL & LEGISLATION LEGAL & LEGISLATION House Passes NRA-Backed Legislation to Reign in Mass Surveillance
On the heels of a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit holding that the government had overstepped its bounds with bulk collection of telephone metadata under Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the House on Wednesday voted to pass the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015. This NRA-backed legislation would reauthorize Section 215, which expires on May 22, but with significant curbs to prevent its misuse against Americans who are under no individualized suspicion of wrongdoing. |
LEGAL & LEGISLATION NEWS Obama Administration Opposes CMP Handgun Sales
The House of Representatives has approved Congressman Mike D. Rogers’ amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which—if accepted in the Senate—could make it possible for Americans who meet stringent requirements to purchase a military surplus handgun from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. As NRA High Power and CMP Service Rifle competitors know, the CMP is authorized under federal law to sell surplus rifles and ammunition to U.S. citizens of age, who belong to shooting clubs affiliated with the program, after passing a background check, and satisfying all federal and state laws. Representative Rogers’ amendment would simply extend the authorization to include other firearms. For example, allowing the Army to provide the program with 100,000 M1911 .45 caliber pistols. This would benefit the Army, the CMP and taxpayers alike. |

On May 12, 2015, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) introduced H.R. 2283 or the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act of 2015. According to a report from The Hill (full text of the legislation has not been received by the Government Publishing Office at press time) the bill would require that ammunition sellers be federally licensed, that online ammunition purchasers show a photo identification in-person at an “authorized dealer” in order to take receipt of their orders, and that any purchases of more than 1000 rounds made within five consecutive days be reported to the Attorney General. |
NEWS Fail: Professor Claims Gun Rights Lead to Grade Inflation
Most critics of campus carry couch their cultural bigotry against firearms and their owners in the dubious rhetoric of “public safety.” Yet an instructor at Texas Women’s University has come up with a new argument to suppress Second Amendment rights on campus. Writing in Newsweek, TWU Assistant Professor of Sociology Jessica Gullion stokes fears that campus carry would lead to rampant grade inflation. “Will we soon see a new sort of grade inflation,” Gullion asks, “with students earning a 4.0 GPA with their firepower rather than brainpower?” |
