Awakened by the sound of the front door screen of his Virginia Beach, Va., home being pushed in, Thomas Smith picked up a shotgun and began to search the house. He found a man in the dining room and asked what he was doing there. When the intruder approached, Smith retreated, asking him to leave. The man instead made a threatening gesture and kept coming, and Smith fired, killing him.
