This past weekend, the New Mexico Senate approved SB 148, the Personal Protection Act by Sen. Shannon Robinson, on a 25-17 vote. SB 148 allows trained, law-abiding citizens to obtain a license to carry a handgun for self-defense. The bill now moves to the House Judiciary Committee. This committee already added anti-gun amendments to a similar bill (HB 277 by Rep. Judy Vanderstar Russell) that required annual renewal of carry licenses and allowed cities and counties to ban carrying within their limits.
