Michigan Hunters Support Wildlife—Buy a Dove Stamp!

Thursday, September 16, 2004

By now most hunters are aware that the Michigan Legislature has declared that the mourning dove is a game bird. What some hunters don’t realize is that at the same time the legislature created a dove stamp. Any hunter who is going to hunt dove must purchase this $2 stamp. The proceeds from the stamp will be split evenly on projects that benefit both game and non-game species. The willingness of hunters to spend their dollars to benefit game and non-game species is more proof of their dedication and commitment to all wildlife.

Anti-hunters have begun an effort to gather signatures to repeal the dove hunting legislation. In doing so they will also be eliminating the dove stamp, thereby eliminating a source of funding that will help the birds they claim to love. Hunters should act now to show their commitment to wildlife by purchasing a dove stamp. Even if you don’t plan on hunting dove this year, buy a dove stamp when you buy your hunting license. The stamp is also available to non-hunters and there is no limit on the number you can buy. The stamps are available wherever hunting licenses are sold. You can purchase your dove stamp online at: http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/welcome.asp or to find a hunting license vendor near you go to: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363_14518-34869--,00.html
