Illinois Governor Seeks To Enact Semi-Auto Firearm Ban!

Monday, September 20, 2004

Two of the most powerful anti-gun extremists in Illinois, Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (D), have launched yet another assault on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms. As everyone in the pro-gun community knows, the federal ban on so-called "assault weapons" officially expired on Monday, September 13, and the gun-ban duo of Blagojevich and Daley wasted no time trying to exploit the public`s confusion over the issue by proposing Illinois enact its own law. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Governor and Mayor announced in separate appearances on Tuesday their intention to "remedy" the ban’s expiration "at the state level," with Blagojevich claiming he would "do what we can here in Illinois during the veto session."

We can anticipate a heated two weeks in November during the Fall Veto Session, as Blagojevich, Daley, and anti-gun extremists in Illinois do all they can to promote their gun-ban agenda. The Governor has already shown the anti-gun depths to which he will sink when he vetoed a bill (SB 2165) in August that would have strengthened the right to self defense in the home. In addition, Mayor Daley, along with Chicago Alderman Ray Suarez (Ward 31), is hosting an "Anti-Gun March" in Chicago’s Ward 31 on Tuesday, September 28, which will likely serve to promote Daley’s efforts to pass gun-ban legislation in November. NRA members can help defeat the anti-gun efforts of Blagojevich, Daley, et al., by contacting their State Representatives and Senators TODAY, and urging them to oppose any efforts to ban semi-automatic firearms during the Fall Veto Session. Also, please be sure to contact your lawmakers and urge them to vote to override the Governor’s veto of SB 2165 during the Fall Veto Session. The Senate can be reached by calling (217) 782-4517, and the House can be reached at (217) 782-8223.
