South Dakota Right-to-Carry Bills Clash!

Friday, January 25, 2008

The Committee on Education, at the request of the Board of Regents, has introduced House Bill 1086, to ban firearms on college campuses and their properties.  In addition to banning firearms in vehicles, the bill would disarm lawful permit holders, including in their residences on campus.  A hearing date in the House State Affairs Committee has not yet been scheduled.

House Bill 1261, introduced on Tuesday, January 22 by State Representative Thomas Brunner (R-29) and State Senator Dennis Schmidt (R-33), is competing legislation to HB 1086.  HB 1261 would prevent universities from restricting the right to carry or posses a firearm on universities in South Dakota.  Universities would not be allowed to expel, dismiss, or penalize any person who carries or possesses a firearm in accordance with state law.

HB 1261 is a much more common sense approach that will not penalize students who enjoy hunting and shooting in South Dakota.  It also affirms these student’s right of personal protection.

HB 1261 has been assigned to the House State Affairs Committee.  No hearing has been scheduled.
Please contact the members of the Committee today and respectfully urge them to support HB1261 and to oppose HB1086.
