Two Anti-Gun Bills to Be Heard by Hawaii Legislature!

Monday, February 11, 2008

Please Contact Members of the Committees and Urge Them to Oppose
HB2999 and SB2020!

Senate Bill 2020, introduced by Senators Will Espero (D-20) and Clarence Nishihara (D-18), would mandate that each round of ammunition sold or possessed in Hawaii be marked with a serial number and registered to the purchaser at the time of sale.  SB2020 is slated to be heard in the Senate Judiciary and Labor Committee on Tuesday, February 12 at 9:00 a.m.  The House version of this bill, HB 2392, was de-railed last week in the House Judiciary Committee due to overwhelming opposition from the pro-gun and firearms manufacturing communities, and the Hawaii Attorney General.

Please contact the members of the Senate Judiciary and Labor Committee and ask that they oppose this de-facto gun ban when it comes before them for a vote. The committee will take testimony until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11th.  Committee member contact information can be found here.

House Bill 2999, introduced at the request of the Honolulu Police Department, is slated to be heard before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, February 12th.  Included in this anti-gun omnibus bill is a ban on the possession or sale of .50 caliber BMG rifles and .50 BMG cartridges, a requirement that all guns sold must be accompanied with a safety device, prohibits the sale of ammunition unless the purchaser shows proof of registration for the firearm for which the ammunition is to be purchased, as well as photo ID proving that the purchaser is the person that the firearm is registered to.  HB 2999 also requires the Attorney General to adopt rules setting standards for firearms dealers to secure firearms and requires dealers to report a theft of a firearm within 24 hours.

Please voice your strong opposition to this bill!  The House Judiciary Committee will be taking testimony until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11th.  Email your testimony to the committee as soon as possible to [email protected]. For individual committee member contact information, please click here.
