Rhode Island: “Microstamping” Legislation Heard in Senate Committee!

Friday, April 25, 2008

Please Contact the Members of the Senate Committee Today!

The Rhode Island State House Committee on Judiciary pulled House Bill 7834 off of its agenda, however in its place, the Senate Committee on Judiciary heard testimony on its companion bill, Senate Bill 2720, on Thursday, April 24.

S2720, introduced by State Senators Harold Metts (D-6), Juan Pichardo (D-2) and Paul Jabour (D-5), would ban the sale of semi-automatic handguns not equipped with so-called "microstamping" technology.  Microstamping is an unproven technology that would require identifying marks to be etched into the firing pin and breech face of a firearm in such a manner that these marks are transferred to the cartridge case upon firing.  The technology can easily be defeated with common household tools, has no public safety value, and will add substantially to the cost of the firearm.

Since hearing the testimonies on S2720, the committee could vote on the measures at any time.  Please contact your State Senator, as well as the members of the Senate Committee on Judiciary IMMEDIATELY and respectfully urge them to oppose S2720!  Contact information for your State Senator can be found by clicking here.  Contact information for the State Senate Committee on Judiciary can be found below.

While HB7834 is no longer on the House committee’s agenda, it could be brought back up for a vote any time, so please continue contacting your State Representative and urge them oppose any measure the dampens your Second Amendment rights.  You can find your State Representative by clicking here.
