APPEARS IN Hunting

Legislative Update for the Green Mountain State

Friday, March 27, 2009

Senate Bill 113, sponsored by State Senator Ginny Lyons (D-Chittenden), would ban coyote contests (similar to a buck hunt contest).  If the precedent is established to ban one type of competition, deer pools or fishing derbies could be next.

Coyotes are predators.  They kill farm livestock and deer and can attack children.  S113 is currently in the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy.

Please contact Senator Lyons, the bill sponsor and Chair of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Energy, at 802-863-6129 or email [email protected] and respectfully urge her to pull or withdraw S113.

House Bill 115, sponsored by State Representative Maxine Jo Grad (D-Washington 2), would allow a landowner to prohibit the training of bear-hunting dogs on his property.  The banning of one type of hunting dog leads to the banning of others for training.  Worse, there is no specific language in the bill to describe its limitations.

House Bill 411, sponsored by State Representative Steven Adams (R-Windsor 4), would exempt the construction of improvements at an existing recreational shooting range that are intended to improve the safety of firing positions, buildings, or other facilities at the sport shooting range from Act 250.

House Bill 240, sponsored by State Representative Steven Adams (R-Windsor 4), would direct the Department of Fish and Wildlife to maintain a baseline acreage of department-controlled hunting lands.  Any reduction of department-controlled hunting lands would have to be replaced.

House Bill 423, sponsored by State Representative Steven Adams (R-Windsor 4), would accomplish numerous favorable changes to Vermont's laws on firearms.  Self-defense would be favorably improved, as would firearm state purchase regulations and record keeping laws.

House Bill 393, sponsored by State Representative Joseph Baker (R-Rutland 1-2), would bar property owners from prohibiting firearms that are possessed or locked in a motor vehicle while in a parking lot where the vehicle is lawfully present.

Please call members of the Vermont House of Representatives and respectfully urge them to oppose H115 and to support H411, H240, H423 and H393.  Contact information for the members can be found by clicking
