Two Important Bills Pending Action in Vermont!

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Please Stand-Up and Make Your Voices Heard!

As the legislative session in Montpelier winds down, two bills of importance to Vermont’s gun owners and sportsmen are currently pending action.

House Bill 136 would have a devastating impact on Vermont hunters by requiring that any person who has just one intact dog which they intend to breed to be licensed as a kennel.  This would prevent average hunters from breeding their dogs for their own use without first registering as a licensed kennel.  H.136 also classifies anyone selling, exchanging or donating even a single dog as a pet dealer.  In addition to the effects on individual dog owners, this is problematic for sporting dog kennels that routinely exchange dogs between kennels to ensure quality bloodlines.  H.136 would also allow out of state animal “rights” activists to conduct inspections and investigations targeting law-abiding kennels in Vermont.

If this sounds like some of the most radical legislation in the country, it’s because it is.  The anti-hunting Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has been working on a national campaign to harass and regulate hunters who own dogs.  Do not allow these anti-hunting extremists to succeed in Vermont.

H.136 is being rushed through the legislature during the last days of session and Vermont Leadership needs to hear from you!

House Bill 313 would allow residents of the State of Vermont to purchase rifles and shotguns in other states and would also allow residents of other states to purchase rifles and shotguns in the state of Vermont.

Please contact Senate President Peter Shumlin (D-Windham) and the Speaker, Shap Smith (D-Lamoille-Washington-1), TODAY and respectfully voice your opposition to H.136.  Senator Shumlin can be reached by phone at (802) 387-4447 or email [email protected].  To contact the Speaker, please call (802) 828-2245 or email [email protected].

Also, please call the Speaker and State Representative Michael Obuchowski (D-Windham-4) and respectfully urge them to keep the pro-gun language in H.313.  Representative Obuchowski can be reached at (802) 463-3094 or email [email protected].
