Bloomberg At It Again

Friday, February 4, 2011

With Super Bowl Sunday approaching, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has demonstrated why he would fail as an NFL head coach.  While most coaches modify their playbooks to adapt to their opponents, Bloomberg simply dusts off his tired, old plays, game after game.

In 2007, Mayor Bloomberg initiated a number of "Simulated Straw Purchases" at Virginia gun shows.  In response, then-Virginia Attorney General (now Governor) Bob McDonnell sent Mayor Bloomberg a letter to remind him that Virginia's House Bill 2653–which prohibits gun dealer entrapment schemes such as those orchestrated by the Mayor–was set to go into effect just a couple of short months after Bloomberg initiated his sting operations.  Attorney General McDonnell warned that Bloomberg and his agents could face legal action and be charged with a felony if they did not cease their dubious sting operations.  All of this occurred right around the time of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Fast forward to the present day, and Hizzoner is at it again--this time sending his operatives to Arizona, site of another horrific criminal act, to conduct "simulated straw purchases."  And a FoxNews.com article this week reported that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer slammed Bloomberg, saying it was interesting that the mayor has enough spare time on his hands to come to Arizona to launch a sting operation.  Brewer said, "He's out here in Arizona solving our problems.  I guess he believes that he has solved all the problems in New York."

The article went on to note that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio wondered why Bloomberg didn't notify his office about any alleged violations.

"Why is Mayor Bloomberg concerned about law enforcement in my county?  Maybe I should send undercover deputies to New York," Arpaio tweeted on his Real Sheriff Joe Twitter account.

For her part, Brewer said she has no intention of sending investigators to spy on New York.

"I'll let him take care of his state," she said of Bloomberg.

Bloomberg's latest undercover campaign is nothing more than another exploitive attack on the non-existent gun show "loophole" and an attempt to bolster his anti-gun political agenda.

Rest assured, NRA-ILA is monitoring Bloomberg's reactivation of these undercover stings and will be working on legislation in Arizona and other states to outlaw this activity as we did in Virginia.
