Two Pro-Gun Bills Pass in Ohio House and Head to Senate

Thursday, May 12, 2011

On May 11, two pro-gun bills passed in the state House.  House Bill 45, an important self-defense reform bill that would simplify where a firearm can be carried, passed by a 56 to 39 vote (roll call vote) and House Bill 54, which would provide individuals a pathway to restore firearm rights, passed by a 78 to 18 vote (roll call vote).  These bills are now headed to the state Senate.

Introduced by state Representatives Danny Bubp (R-88) and Terry Johnson (R-89), HB 45 would eliminate the current confusing standards of carrying a firearm in a motor vehicle.  In addition, the proposal would also allow permit holders to carry a firearm for self-defense in a restaurant that serves alcohol, provided they are not consuming alcohol, thus eliminating another “victim zone” in Ohio.

HB 54, introduced by state Representatives Ron Maag (R-35) and Jarrod Martin (R-70), would bring Ohio in compliance with federal law to provide for the restoration of firearm rights for certain individuals.
