Oklahoma Session Drawing to a Close!

Friday, May 20, 2011

Thank Your Legislators and Governor for Pro-Gun Legislation Enacted this Session!

With your support and help, Oklahoma state legislators and the NRA worked together in this 2011 legislative session to promote key pro-gun legislation.  As business wraps up in the capitol this week, Oklahoma state legislators further protected the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners with the passage of the important “Parking Lot/ Employee Protection Bill” and signing into law a “Castle Doctrine” expansion bill and the “Fraudulent Firearms Purchase Prevention Act.”  Please contact the bill sponsors to thank them for protecting your gun rights!

On April 27, Governor Mary Fallin signed into law a "Castle Doctrine" expansion bill. House Bill 1439 expands the right to use deadly force if necessary by the owner, manager or employee of a business against an intruder, when there is reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm. This bill was authored by state Representative Steve Vaughan (R-37) and state Senator David Myers (R-20).  HB 1439 passed in the state House by a 87 to 6 vote and passed in the Senate by a 42 to 3 vote.  Please contact the bill sponsors today to express your thanks!

On April 7, Governor Mary Fallin signed into law NRA-backed Senate Bill 856, the “Fraudulent Firearms Purchase Prevention Act”.  This bill will protect lawful firearms retailers from illegal gun sting operations such as those conducted by anti-gun New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  Bloomberg has sent hired agents into other states to attempt illegal firearm purchases in an effort to blame federally licensed firearm retailers for gun crime in New York City.  This bill was authored by state Senator Steve Russell (R-45) and sponsored in the House by state Representative Paul Wesselhoft (R-54).  Prior to being signed into law by the governor, SB 856 received unanimous support in both the state Senate and the state House. Please contact the bill sponsors today to express your thanks!

Thanks to your active support, House Bill 1652 was finally passed in the Senate, and awaits the Governor’s signature.  This “Parking Lot/Employee Protection” expansion bill was previously passed in both the state House and Senate, but was sent to separate conference committees due to minor differences in the versions of this bill passed in both chambers. Earlier this week, this bill passed in the state House by a 75 to 5 vote, and passed in the state Senate yesterday by a 35 to 12 vote.

HB 1652 would allow concealed carry permit holders to lock their firearms in their vehicles on technology center campuses and parking lots set aside for use by governmental entities and professional sporting events. This bill was authored by state Representative John Enns (R-41) in the state House and is sponsored by state Senators Steve Russell (R-45) and Anthony Sykes (R-24) in the state Senate.  Please contact Governor Fallin's office and respectfully ask her to sign this important bill into law!  Contact information for Governor Fallin’s office can be found here.

Also, be sure to contact the following state legislators and thank them for sponsoring HB 1652!
