California: Update on Firearm-Related Legislation

Hearings have been scheduled for next week, please take action!

Earlier this week, the California legislature heard several firearm and hunting-related bills. Below is an update on each of these bills and the action that is required to your Assembly Member and the respective committees on upcoming hearings.  Please forward this alert to your family, friends, and fellow gun-owners and sportsmen and urge them to take action.

NRA-supported Assembly Bill 1154 was heard and passed by the Assembly Committee on Judiciary.  AB 1154 is now scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Committee on Public Safety on Tuesday, April 28.  AB 1154 would provide that the California Public Records Act (CPRA) not be construed to require the disclosure of private information of civilian licensed CCW holders.  Please contact the members of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety and urge them to SUPPORT AB 1154.  Contact information can be found here.

NRA-supported Assembly Bill 950 was heard in both the Assembly Committee on Public Safety and the Committee on Appropriations and is now heading to the House floor for consideration.  AB 950 would allow a person who is subject to a "gun violence" restraining order to transfer his or her firearms to a licensed firearms dealer.  Please contact your state Assembly Member and respectfully urge him or her to SUPPORT AB 950.  Contact information can be found here.

NRA-supported Assembly Bill 665 was heard in both the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife and the Committee on Appropriations and is now heading to the House floor for consideration.  AB 665 would provide that the state fully occupies the field of the taking and possession of fish and game and would prohibit a city or county from adopting an ordinance or regulation relating to the taking or possession of fish and game.  Please contact your state Assembly Member and respectfully urge him or her to SUPPORT AB 665.  Contact information can be found here.

NRA-supported Assembly Bill 499 has been scheduled to be heard in Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife on Tuesday, April 28.  AB 499 would authorize a person with a valid license to carry a firearm capable of being concealed on the person, consistent with the terms of that license, while engaged in the taking of deer with bow and arrow.  Please contact the members of the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife and respectfully urge him or her to SUPPORT AB 499.  Contact information can be found here.

NRA-supported Senate Bill 566 was heard and failed to pass out of committee by a vote of 2 to 4 in the Senate Committee on Public Safety.  SB 566 has been amended and will be heard again in on Tuesday, April 28.  SB 566 was amended to lower the Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) for a handgun safety certificate to $15 for an honorably discharged member of the United States Armed Forces, the National Guard, the Air National Guard, or the active reserve components of the United States.  Please contact the members of the Senate Committee on Public Safety urging them to SUPPORT SB 566.  Contact information can be found here.

Anti-gun Senate Bill 707 was heard and passed by a vote of 4 to 2 in the Senate Committee on Public Safety.  SB 707 is now scheduled to be heard in the Senate Committee on Appropriations on Monday, April 27.  Anti-gun SB 707 would prohibit CCW holders and retired law enforcement officers from possessing firearms on any properties that make up the grounds of a K-12 school or university, including many parking lots, common areas that may not be readily identifiable as school grounds, and student apartment buildings.  Please contact the members of the Senate Committee on Appropriations urging them to OPPOSE SB 707.  Contact information can be found here.
