Yesterday, the South Dakota Senate unanimously passed House Bill 1138. Sponsored by state Representative Thomas Brunner (R-29), HB 1138 would extend the length of time that a permit to Carry a Concealed Pistol (CCP) is valid. Currently, permit holders must renew their license every four years, as well as pay the associated fees in order to do so. House Bill 1138 would allow CCP holders to renew their permit every five years, thereby lowering fees imposed on South Dakotans who wish to carry a firearm for self-defense.

House Bill 1190 is currently pending consideration in the Senate and could receive a vote as early as Monday, March 7. Sponsored by state Representative G. Mark Mickelson (R-13) and state Senator Arthur Rusch (R-17), HB 1190 would create a Gold Card concealed pistol permit, as well as upgrade South Dakota’s existing Enhanced permit. Although proper ATF approval is still needed, those who are approved for a Gold Card permit will meet the minimum ATF requirements for a NICS background check exemption when purchasing a firearm.
