Bloomberg-backed Groups Fail to Stop Permitless Carry Bill in Missouri Legislature

Friday, May 13, 2016

Fairfax, Va.-- Racing the clock on the last day of Missouri’s 2016 legislative calendar, a permitless carry bill is now headed to Governor Nixon’s desk for signature. Backed by the National Rifle Association, Senate Bill 656 allows anyone legally allowed to possess a firearm to carry that firearm without a permit from the state.

“With Governor Nixon’s signature, Missourians will have several options when it comes to protecting their families and homes,” said NRA spokesman Lars Dalseide. “Hopefully the governor won’t buckle when the Bloomberg gun control machine makes him decide between political capital and the safety of his constituents.”

The NRA-backed bill passed both the Missouri Senate and House of Representatives despite attempts by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control groups to smear the legislation with fear tactics and hyperbolic claims.

“The distortions and lies couldn’t erase the fact that states enacting similar legislation saw their murder rates drop by as much as 23%. If your goal is to save lives then this bill deserves the governor’s signature,” Dalseide continued.

Introduced by Sen. Brian Munzlinger, SB 656 also strengthens Missouri’s Stand Your Ground laws and gives members of the military extra time to renew their carry permits.

“On behalf of the 5 million members of the NRA, I want to thank Senators Munzlinger, Onder, Riddle, and Schaefer along with Speaker Richardson and Representatives Burlison, Taylor, Ross, Haar and Ceirpot for their leadership in passing this important bill,” Dalseide concluded.

Senate Bill 656 would:

  • Recognize Missourians right to Constitutional/Permitless Carry where open carry is not prohibited
  • Expand Missouri’s current Stand your Ground laws
  • Expand Castle Doctrine protections for anyone legally allowed into your home, vehicle, business and property
  • Specify that except for credit card fees incurred, no additional fee beyond $100 may be charged to process concealed carry permits and allows military members extra time to renew their permits
  • Implement 10, 20 and 50 year options for non-reciprocity issued permits
  • Allow components of firearm training for RTC permits to be online

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
