New Jersey: Assembly Committee to Hear More Gun Control Schemes

On Thursday, September 22, the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing on a trio of anti-gun bills.  As the Garden State grapples with high taxes, crumbling infrastructure, and budget deficits, anti-gun politicians in Trenton have once again prioritized the harassment of law-abiding gun owners.  This year alone, politicians have spent several weeks holding hearings on dozens of anti-gun bills, several of which have been vetoed by Governor Chris Christie that do nothing to seriously address violent crime.  At the top of the Thursday agenda is a bill to ban toy guns, A.1119 by Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-34).

Also on the hearing agenda, will be A.3934, sponsored by Assemblywoman Joann Downey (D-11), which would ban the sale of all handguns not equipped with microstamping technology and create a registration database of those individuals who purchase them.  Microstamping is easily circumvented by criminals with common household tools.  This gimmick legislation is simply designed to make firearms and ammunition more expensive, while creating a database and registration of gun owners.

Anti-gun Democrats in the Assembly are also resurrecting a failed bill from 2013 which would allow unaccountable individuals such as health care workers and counselors to suspend a person’s constitutional rights by simply naming someone as unsuitable.  A.2938, sponsored by Assemblywoman Patricia Egan Jones (D-4), would bypass a legal process and an official adjudication typically used to determine fitness, opening the door to unjustified surrender of both personal property and constitutional rights.  Such a flagrant abuse of due process is something Trenton politicians frequently employ in their gun ban schemes.

It’s time elected officials in Trenton set aside their political agendas and start addressing the state’s serious problems.  The three aforementioned bills do nothing but waste taxpayer dollars and ensure the state’s violent crime will remain a serious problem.  Please click the “Take Action” button above to contact your Assembly members and ask them to respectfully reject these gun control bills.
