A clerk at Family Dollar thwarted an armed robbery Sunday night, Springfield police said. Around 8:10 p.m., police said, the robber entered the Family Dollar at 1425 E. Cook Street and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. The clerk grabbed the gun and the two men struggled before the robber ran out of the store empty handed, police said. Police searched the area with a dog but could not locate the robber. He was described as a light-skinned black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black coat with gray sleeves and a gray hood with a white covering over his face. People with information on this or other crimes can submit tips anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 788-8427 or they can submit a tip online at cashfortips.us. Tips can also be sent by text. Type TIP672 plus a message and send to CRIMES. Informants are eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000.
