California: Legislative Update

Today, June 2, marked the deadline for bills to pass from their house of origin. Four anti-gun bills and one pro-hunting bill have satisfied this deadline and will continue to move through the legislative process. Please use our TAKE ACTION button below to contact your state Legislators to OPPOSE SB 464, SB 497, AB 7, and AB 424 AND SUPPORT AB 521.

Anti-Gun Bills:

Assembly Bill 7, sponsored by Mike Gipson (D-64), would further extend California’s ban on the open carry of an unloaded firearm while in or upon a public place or public street within a prohibited area located within the unincorporated area of a county.  AB 7 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, June 13.

Senate Bill 464, sponsored by Senator Jerry Hill (D-13), would increase the storage and security requirements of all firearms in the inventory of a licensed firearms dealer.  SB 464 is waiting for committee assignment in the state Assembly.

Senate Bill 497sponsored by Senator Anthony Portantino (D-25), would extend California’s one-handgun-a-month limitation to all guns.  SB 464 is waiting for committee assignment in the state Assembly.

Assembly Bill 424, sponsored by Kevin McCarty (D-7), would remove the authority of a school district superintendent, his or her designee, or equivalent school authority to provide written permission for a person to possess a firearm within a school zone absent limited exceptions.  AB 424 has been assigned to the Senate Public Safety Committee and is awaiting to be scheduled for a hearing.

Pro-Hunting Bill:

Assembly Bill 521 sponsored by Assembly Member Jim Frazier (D-11), would significantly reduce California’s high-priced resident elk tags from nearly $450 to $100 and would additionally create an allocation of an apprentice (youth) elk tags for $20 per tag. Currently, youth hunters pay the same price for elk tags as adults.  AB 521 is waiting for committee assignment in the state Senate.
