Pittsburgh: Councilman Introduces Ordinance to Disarm Citizens in City Parks

On September 26, Pittsburgh Councilman Dan Gilman introduced ordinance 2017-1920 to amend Pittsburgh City Code in order to ban firearms in city parks. The new ordinance would prohibit the uncasing, possession, and use of firearms capable of discharging or propelling a projectile in City parks and playgrounds. Those in violation could be charged with the misdemeanor crime and would face up to $300 in fines and as much as 30 days in jail.  Please contact council members and urge them to OPPOSE this proposed ordinance!  Click the “Take Action” button below to contact council members.

Title 18 Pa.C.S., Section 6120 of Pennsylvania law specifically states that "No county, municipality or township may in any manner regulate the lawful ownership, possession, transfer or transportation of firearms, ammunition or ammunition components when carried or transported for purposes not prohibited by the laws of this Commonwealth."  Despite current law, Councilman Gilman now seeks to enact an illegal gun control ordinance that would disarm law-abiding citizens who chose to exercise their Second Amendment rights to defend themselves and their families.

State preemption regulating firearms was enacted by the legislature to avoid the possibility of 2,639 separate firearm laws across the Commonwealth.  Without preemption there would be a myriad of local firearm laws making compliance impossible for law-abiding gun owners.  In fact gun owners would have difficulty even knowing about laws, much less understanding them.

Again, please contact council members and urge them to oppose this proposed ordinance 2017-1920. Stay tuned to www.nraila.org and your email inbox for further updates.
