California: Healdsburg Planning Commission to Hold Special Meeting for Zoning Restrictions on Firearms Dealers

California: Healdsburg Planning Commission to Hold Special Meeting for Zoning Restrictions on Firearms Dealers

Today, March 13, the Healdsburg Planning Commission will hold a public discussion regarding Land Use Amendment LUA 2018-02 (Firearm Sale Ordinance).  If enacted, the ordinance will prohibit firearm businesses from operating within 500 feet of a church, school, park, or other firearm business, and would require all firearm businesses to first obtain a special permit from the City as a condition of opening a new business location.

We encourage all our members to attend and voice their opposition to these ill-guided measures.  Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM at the City Hall-City Council Chambers, 401 Grove Street, Healdsburg, CA.

Members of the public can speak during the public comment period of the meeting but must provide name and address. Speakers are generally limited to five (5) minutes for their presentations.

Less than four months ago, Healdsburg enacted an Interim Urgency Ordinance establishing a 45-day moratorium on the development of any new retail uses selling firearms. On January 22, 2018, the City Council extended that moratorium for 10 months and 15 days. Both were enacted for the purposes of allowing the City time to propose and adopt the firearm dealer ordinance now before the Planning Commission.

Neither the Moratorium nor the proposed zoning ordinances serve as a response to any actual problem in the City of Healdsburg, therefore there is no correlation between public safety and the location of any firearms business. Firearms dealers are some of the most regulated businesses in California and additional restrictions are duplicative and burdensome to these retailers.

If you are unable to attend either meeting, or would prefer to submit written comments on the proposal, you may email or mail your comments to the following:
