Nebraska: Firearm Records Confidentiality Bill on Agenda

On Tuesday, March 26^th, the Nebraska state Senate is expected to hear Legislative Bill 902, on General File, to ensure that personal information contained in Firearm Permit and Purchase records will be protected from public records requests.  Please contact your state Senator and urge them to SUPPORT LB 902.  Click the “Take Action” button to contact your Senator.

Legislative Bill 902, introduced by Senator Bruce Bostelman (LD-23), previously passed from the Government, Military and Veteran Affairs Committee by a vote of 7-0.  It will ensure the confidentiality of personal information associated with many firearm records.  Current law already guarantees that Concealed Handgun Permit holder personal information is confidential and protected from public records requests.

Even states with otherwise restrictive firearm laws like Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York State protect licensee information from public disclosure, recognizing the public safety concerns of releasing this private information. In addition to releasing the confidential, personally identifying information of law-abiding permit holders who simply wish to protect themselves, this information, if publicly released, would likely include the names and addresses of current and former law enforcement, judges, undercover officers, private investigators, victims of domestic violence and individuals with no-contact order or orders of protection.
