It is critical that you call your state Senators immediately at 802-828-2228 and urge them to OPPOSE S.55. Yesterday, the House passed S. 55, a sweeping gun control bill,which raises the age for long gun purchases, requires mandatory background checks on nearly all non- commercial private firearm transfers, bans standard capacity rifle magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds and certain firearm accessories. The House amended the bill to allow 15 rounds for handguns. However, let's be clear, this bill from top to bottom, regardless of amendments, is a full-scale assault on the Second Amendment rights of Vermonters.
Because this is a Senate bill which was amended in the House, it goes back to the Senate for concurrence, a conference committee or possible referral back to its committee of origin. The House dealt with this bill before the state budget on Friday, so it is abundantly clear that anti-gun lawmakers are trying to push this bill to Gov. Phil Scott with great haste. Therefore, it's possible that the Senate votes for concurrence on this bill as early as later this afternoon, so we are asking members to contact their Senators immediately and politely request tell them to OPPOSE S.55.
