Rhode Island: House Committee Action Slated For Tomorrow

Rhode Island: House Committee Action Slated For Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the House Judiciary Committee will meet upon Rise of the House to vote on a pair of gun control bills.  H.7075 by Rep. Robert Craven and H.7688 by Rep. Dennis Canario would ban firearm accessories and create "extreme risk protection orders" with little due process protections.   NRA-ILA, in conjunction with all local pro-Second Amendment groups, is calling for Ocean State gun owners to rally at the Capitol at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10 in opposition to these measures.

H.7075 is a "bump stock" ban, but it does much more than that.  The bill includes other features such as, "...any device, part, accessory or attachment designed to accelerate the rate of fire of a semi-automatic...".    In other words, innocuous features including fore-grips and competition triggers could be banned, resulting in a $10,000 fine and 10 year prison sentence.  This harsh bill is poorly crafted and should be opposed.  The only thing this is going to do is put law-abiding competitive shooters in jeopardy of prosecution.

H.7866 is the "red flag" bill and would create broad gun ban powers under the guise of extreme risk protection orders.  This sweeping legislation would allow almost anyone to have another's guns taken with little to no due process.  The bill allows seizure and forfeiture through ex parte hearings where a person isn't given notice and a hearing.

Finally, please note that the committee plans to vote on the bills but there is no scheduled public testimony.  Again, please plan to attend the Statehouse rally on Tuesday in opposition to these bills and the other anti-Second Amendment bills still under consideration in Providence.  Please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee at 401-222-2258 and respectfully ask them to oppose these bills.
