California: Gun Show Ban Legislation and Vehicle Storage Bills to be Heard in Committee

Next week, both the Assembly Public Safety Committee and the Senate Governance and Finance Committee will be meeting to consider several anti-gun measures.  Please use the TAKE ACTION buttons below to urge members of the Assembly Public Safety Committee to OPPOSE AB 12, AB 688 and AB 893 and members of the Senate Governance and Finance Committee to OPPOSE SB 281.

Tuesday March 26 - Assembly Public Safety Committee

OPPOSE – Assembly Bill 12, sponsored by Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin (D-44), would allow for gun violence restraining orders (GVRO) to be issued for a period of up to five years.  GVRO's are not issued on the basis of a criminal conviction or mental adjudication, but based on third party allegations. Currently, GVRO’s can be issued for a period of one year and can be extended annually without limitation. It should be noted that if an individual is truly dangerous, existing law already provides a variety of mechanisms to deal with the individual, all of which can lead to firearm prohibitions in appropriate cases.

OPPOSE – Assembly Bill 688, sponsored by Assembly Member Kansen Chu (D-25), would place stringent storage requirements on all firearms that are left in an unattended vehicle, regardless of the duration. The requirements set forth in this legislation are overly burdensome and in some cases unattainable storage options that are neither practical nor possible for the average firearm owner who may temporarily leave their vehicle unattended on their way into the field or to the range.

OPPOSE – Assembly Bill 893, sponsored by Assembly Member Todd Gloria (D-78), would prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition at the Del Mar fairgrounds located in the 22nd District Agricultural Association on and after January 1, 2021.

Wednesday March 27 - Senate Governance and Finance Committee

OPPOSE - Senate Bill 281, sponsored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-11) would prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition on any property owned, occupied, operated or controlled by the 1-A Agricultural Association, which includes the Cow Palace on or after January 1, 2020.
