Extreme “Red Flag” legislation, Senate Bill 5, has been referred to the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and immediately scheduled for a hearing TOMORROW at 1:30pm (location to be determined.) Having only just passed the Senate last Friday by a narrow 22-20 vote, this haste shows that anti-gun lawmakers are rushing to get this gun control measure passed as soon as possible. NRA Member and Second Amendment supporters need to attend this hearing and contact committee members immediately to ask that they OPPOSE Senate Bill 5.
The substitute for Senate Bill 5 requires individuals to surrender firearms to law enforcement based on uncorroborated evidence that they are dangerous -- further, the measure still allows for ex parte petitions, providing NO initial hearing for these individuals before a judge and NO access to mental health services or treatment before they lose their constitutional right to own a firearm. Further, individuals subject to these orders will be immediately included in the NICS database as prohibited persons until the order expires.
There is very little time left in the 2020 Budget Session. Anti-gun Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has prioritized the passage of this bill during a session where legislators should be creating a budget. Please attend this hearing at 1:30pm tomorrow and contact members of the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and ask them to OPPOSE this unnecessary gun control legislation, Senate Bill 5.
