Hawaii: Anti-Gun Bills Continue to Move Through the Legislature

On February 27th, the Hawaii Legislature returned from the five day recess and immediately resumed work on moving anti-gun legislation that will directly impact your rights. The House passed HB 1902, HB 2736, and HB 2744. The bills will now move to the Senate for further consideration. On the Senate side, the Judiciary Committee passed SB 2519 and SB 2635, both with amendments.

Bills Passed by the House that will now be transmitted to the Senate for further consideration:

House Bill 1902 HD2 prohibits possession of magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds and expands the ability to prohibit categories for firearm ownership by requiring medical documentation that an individual is no longer adversely affected from behavioral, emotional, or mental disorders they were treated for as a minor.

HB 2736 HD 1 restricts ammunition purchases and possession to those who provide a proof of firearm registration for the particular caliber of purchase, or to an individual who has been designated as an alternate to purchase ammunition.

House Bill 2744 HD 1 places severe restrictions on certain firearm parts in an effort to ban homebuilt firearms and uses your tax dollars to create a commission to research “gun violence.”

Bills passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee:

Senate Bill 2519 SD 1 prohibits the manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds. Magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds acquired prior to the specified date must be registered with the county similar to firearms. The registered magazines will be prohibited from any transfer other than inheritance.

Senate Bill 2635 SD 1 restricts ammunition purchases to those with a valid permit to purchase a firearm, a handgun safety training affidavit, or hunter education card. It further restricts possession of ammunition for firearms owned by another and requires licensing for ammunition sellers.
