Oregon: UPDATE Legislature Attempting to Combine Anti-Preemption AND Mandatory Storage Into Single Bill

As we previously reported, anti-preemption legislation, SB 554, was scheduled for 2 Public Hearings and a possible Work Session, starting today.  With less than 20 hours before public hearings were set to begin, Senate President Peter Courtney (D - 11) submitted an extensive proposed amendment to SB 554, Amendment 20 (A-20).  A-20 would combine anti-preemption legislation with the mandatory storage requirements proposed in HB 2510. Please contact committee members and ask them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 554.

With the addition of amendment 20, Senate Bill 554 now:

  • Guts Oregon's state firearms preemption laws, leading to a patchwork of inconsistent laws across the Beaver state
  • DOUBLES the cost for Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHL)
  • Adds a $75 charge for renewal of your CHL
  • Implements components of HB 2510, requiring government imposed one-size-fits-all mandatory firearms storage within your own home and vehicle.

This legislation has been tried, and has failed, year after year. In 2021, Democrat leadership seems to want to have their cake and eat it too, by forcing two anti-gun bills into one, SB 554. NRA Members are encouraged to remain active and vigilant.

An additional day of public hearings has been added to the calendar on SB 554 this week. You can register to provide verbal testimony at the public hearings today 4/21, tomorrow 4/22, and Friday 4/23, here

Again, please contact members of the House Rules Committee and ask them to OPPOSE Senate Bill 554.
