Texas House Committee to Hear Anti-Gun Bills to Track, Delay & Deny Lawful Gun Purchases

On Tuesday, April 18, the Texas House Select Committee on Community Safety will hold public hearings on a number of anti-gun proposals, including the following bills listed below:

House Bill 22 (Rep. Joe Moody-D) & House Bill 106 (Rep. Diego Bernal-D) requires federal firearm licensed dealers to report multiple firearms transactions -- sales that are conducted after a state and federal records check -- to state and local law enforcement.  There is no language in the bill outlining what authorities are to do with this information or prohibiting the creation of a firearms registry.

House Bill 236 (Rep. Vikki Goodwin-D) criminalizes the private transfer of firearms between individuals by imposing a so-called universal background check system.  All firearms sales must be conducted through licensed retailers, requiring the completion of lengthy government forms and payment of a fee for every transaction.

House Bill 298 (Rep. Vikki Goodwin-D) imposes a 3-business day waiting period on all firearms transfers by licensed dealers and between private individuals.  Criminals won't adhere to a "cooling off" period and this will simply serve to delay your ability to exercise your right to lawfully purchase and own firearms.

House Bill 2744 (Rep. Tracy King-D) restricts the Second Amendment rights of young adults aged 18-20 by prohibiting them from purchasing most semi-automatic rifles.  At age 18, citizens are eligible to vote, be drafted, serve in the military, serve on a jury, enter into contracts, sue and be sued, get married and own property. Restricting their right to purchase and own firearms is unconstitutional and will not reduce crime.

Tuesday's committee meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m., in Room E2.012, in the Capitol Extension in Austin.  Please make plans to attend this hearing and testify against these measures! If you cannot attend, please use the link below to contact the committee members now, and urge them to OPPOSE ALL anti-gun bills that place further burdens on law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen!

For those persons who will be testifying, information for in-person witness registration can be found here: https://mytxlegis.capitol.texas.gov/HWRSPublic/About.aspx.

A live video broadcast of this hearing will be available here: https://house.texas.gov/video-audio/

Texas residents who wish to electronically submit comments related to these and other bills on the committee's agenda without testifying in person can do so until the hearing is adjourned, by visiting: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c190
