Nevada: Gov. Lombardo Vetoes Anti-Gun Bills

Today, Governor Joe Lombardo promptly vetoed three anti-gun bills that the Legislature passed earlier this week, stemming the tide of new gun control being imposed upon Nevada each year. In his veto message to the Legislature, he stated:

“I will not support legislation that infringes on the constitutional rights of Nevadans… As I stated in my letters, much of the legislation I vetoed today is in direct conflict with legal precedent and established constitutional protections. Therefore, I cannot support them.”

Assembly Bill 354 would have banned possessing firearms within 100 feet of polling places and redefined firearm frames and receivers. Under this legislation, a CCW holder could have potentially faced criminal penalties for simply traversing within an arbitrary distance of a ballot drop box.

Assembly Bill 355 would have discriminated against adults 18-20 years old, and further denied them their Second Amendment rights, by prohibiting them from possessing semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. In addition, it would have required gun owners to lock up their semi-automatic long guns to prevent those under the age of 21 years from accessing them, or face criminal penalties. Under this legislation, both the parent and adult child could have faced criminal penalties while engaged in hunting or shooting sports, with no criminal intent, if using centerfire semi-automatic rifles or shotguns. These are some of the most commonly used firearms for the respective activities.

Senate Bill 171 would have expanded Nevada’s prohibited persons categories for certain misdemeanor crimes and gone above and beyond federal law.

NRA thanks Gov. Lombardo for upholding his commitment to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
