New Mexico: Senate Democrats Pass 7-Day Waiting Period Bill 23-18

Dear Second Amendment Supporters:

Progressive Democrats in the New Mexico Senate passed House Bill 129, the 7-day waiting period bill, on a 23-18 vote last night after rejecting floor amendments offered by Senate Republicans to exempt gun buyers who pass an FBI firearm background check, active military personnel, and persons who have obtained an order of protection against an abuser.  In voting down these common-sense exceptions, they demonstrated that the bill has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with restricting the rights of law-abiding citizens.  Find out how your Senator voted by clicking here

HB 129 now moves back to the House for a vote on whether to agree to amendments adopted in the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is likely to happen early next week.  The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn at noon on Thursday, February 15.

HB 129 mandates a 7-day waiting period on any gun buyer, other than a concealed handgun licensee, who clears an FBI background check to purchase a firearm. This legislation won't impact crime or impulsive acts of self-harm, it will only unnecessarily delay your ability to exercise your right to purchase and own firearms for any number of reasons, including personal protection.
