Colorado: Senate to Attempt Semi-Auto Ban Vote Again Tomorrow

It seems the anti-gun radicals of the General Assembly are hoping that "third time's the charm" for the vote on their semi-automatic ban.

After back-to-back delays the last two weeks, the Senate is set to hold a vote this Thursday, February 13th, on Senate Bill 25-003, the all-encompassing ban on semi-automatic firearms. While public outcry has led to the vote's delay, lawful gun owners must remain vigilant and continue to contact their legislators to ensure the defeat of SB 25-003.

Senate Bill 25-003 bans so-called "specified semiautomatic firearms," which are defined in the bill as "...a semiautomatic rifle or semiautomatic shotgun with a detachable magazine or a gas-operated semiautomatic handgun with a detachable magazine." Semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines have existed for well over a century, and these platforms certainly fit the definition of "in common use" set forth by the District of Columbia V. Heller decision.

SB 25-003 also creates a new definition for "rapid-fire device" and classifies rapid-fire devices as dangerous weapons, which are already prohibited under existing state law.

On the House side of the General Assembly, House Bill 25-1133 has started gaining traction, and will be heard in the House Business Affairs Committee on Thursday, February 13th. HB 25-1133 places age restrictions on the purchase of ammunition for both in-person transactions and delivery orders. The committee will also hold a hearing on February 27th for House Bill 25-1055, which will repeal the state requirements and permitting process for federally-licensed firearms dealers. HB 25-1055 was set for a hearing last week, but was delayed.
