Tomorrow, the Iowa Senate Judiciary Subcommittee will hold a hearing on House File 924, a crucial bill that lowers the minimum age to obtain certain firearm permits from 21 to 18. This bill ensures that young adults can fully exercise their Second Amendment rights, aligning the concealed carry permit age requirement with other adult rights recognized at 18.
In addition, House File 791 is before the Iowa House and will ensure that Iowa’s youth receive proper firearms safety education. This bill directs the state to develop and distribute age-appropriate firearms safety programs for K-12 students. The program will be based on the NRA’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program for younger students (K-6), teaching them how to act safely if they encounter a firearm, and the NRA’s Hunter Safety Course for older students (7-12), to provide the necessary education to receive their certification in hunter safety.
