Ignoring months of advocacy and correspondence from tens of thousands of Coloradans, Governor Jared Polis has signed Senate Bill 25-003 into law. Governor Polis was joined in an invitation-only signing ceremony by gun control advocacy groups, making his position clear that both your advocacy and the Second Amendment mean nothing to him.
On the bill signing, NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford said,
"Behind closed doors, Governor Polis cowardly signed into law the most anti-gun, anti-freedom bill in Colorado's history. Instead of respecting the individual liberties of gun owners and hunters in his state, he bent the knee to the radical gun control element of his party. In Jared's Colorado, you need a Polis permission slip to exercise your constitutional rights. If this proposal was popular with his citizens, it would not need to be enacted in secret."
NRA is grateful to all legislators who voted against this egregious measure, and to all NRA members and fellow Second Amendment advocates who sent hundreds of thousands of messages as this bill moved through the legislative process. NRA will explore all legal options to fight this law.
Senate Bill 25-003 creates a "permit-to-purchase" scheme for banned semi-automatic firearm platforms. To be eligible to apply for the "permit-to-purchase," Coloradoans would need to complete a 12-hour educational course. Other provisions include, but are not limited to, putting the training requirements and permitting process under Colorado Parks and Wildlife's jurisdiction, and placing burdens on local sheriff's departments.
The fight isn't over yet, the legislative session has over a month left until adjournment! We can anticipate that anti-gun radicals in the General Assembly will grow even more emboldened after this, and will continue their attacks on the Second Amendment. Please stay tuned to the NRA-ILA website and your inbox for updates as this legislative session progresses.
