On September 4th, the Committee on Homeland Security, Justice and Public Safety held a hearing on Bill No. 36-0144 in an attempt to impose massive gun control across the U.S. Virgin Islands. The bill passed out of the committee and is now scheduled to be heard in the Committee on Rules and Judiciary.
The legislation proposes extensive gun control measures that would require law-abiding gun owners to surrender or sell "prohibited firearms." It also mandates a safety training course for simply owning a rifle or shotgun. Citizens hoping to defend their homes using a rifle or shotgun would first need to obtain government permission.
The bill further bans ownership and possession of firearm suppressors and standard capacity magazines, and prohibits the concealed carrying of certain semi-automatic firearms.
