Washington: Bill Removing Fee Cap on Firearm Background Checks - Committee Vote TODAY

Today, Thursday, January 29th, at 4pm the House Appropriations committee will hold an executive session on House Bill 2521, removing the cap on how much Washington State Patrol can charge for firearm background checks and expanding the scope of what the collected fees can be used for.  Please contact members of the committee and urge them to OPPOSE HB 2521 by using the TAKE ACTION button below.

HB 2521, the House companion bill to SB 6055, gives broad authority to Washington state bureaucrats to price lawful gun owners out of the market by mandating that fees collected from gun owners cover both direct and indirect costs of administering the firearm background check program. Simultaneously, while expanding how the fees can be used, the bill also removes the fee cap. How broadly this will be interpreted is unclear. However, with the recent permit to purchase scheme and the insatiable appetite for more gun control from the legislature, the potential cost implications for lawful gun owners is extreme.

Despite being considered for a vote in the Appropriations, or fiscal, Committee today, the fiscal note provides no meaningful guidance to the legislature or the public on the economic impact of this bill. The fiscal note provides that it will have an economic impact over $50,000 but the amount above that is “indeterminate,” showing that even the legislature can’t determine the extreme cost implications HB 2521 will have on lawful gun owners.
