Yesterday, on the Senate floor, SF 2263 was amended, at the last minute, to remove key provisions that would have expanded protections for law-abiding gun owners before the bill ultimately passed.
As introduced, SF 2263 allowed individuals to secure a firearm in their vehicle in university and college parking lots, as well as non-secure municipal parking lots. The bill also permitted licensed individuals to have a firearm in their vehicle in K-12 school parking areas and ensured that individuals transporting someone in foster care could lawfully keep a firearm in their vehicle.
Before final passage, however, the Senate adopted an amendment stripping the bill of the provisions allowing concealed carry in vehicles on university campuses and in K-12 pick-up and drop-off areas and parking lots. Forcing those who wish to carry for self-defense to first pull over before they reach the school unloaded their firearm and securely store it before entering the school parking lot to drop off or pick up a student then reverse the process after leaving the school grounds.
Immediately following that vote, the Senate passed SF 2280, legislation allowing members of the General Assembly to carry concealed firearms anywhere in the state, including on school grounds. Expanding their ability to legally carry for self-defense immediately after voting to deny Iowa citizens a fraction of that right.
Click the Take Action button below and respectfully urge your State Senator to restore the removed provisions.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor this legislation and keep Iowa gun owners informed as developments occur.
