Today, March 9th, the Beaufort County Council will hold a hearing on a proposed ordinance regulating firearms discharge. As written, this ordinance poses the risk of creating many unintended consequences that would severely limit responsible residents, farmers, hunters, and other sportsmen's ability to legally discharge a firearm.
Please contact members of the council directly by using the TAKE ACTION button below and urge them to OPPOSE this ordinance, and consider submitting testimony in opposition through the Council website.
The ordinance application of the 500-foot restriction to any building, dwelling, park or playground risks creating what is effectively a total ban on discharging a firearm when put in practice. With this language a building could be considered any structure - a home, a barn, a garage, a tool shed, etc. - all of which would require their own 500-foot buffer. This creates an unachievable and overarching threshold for responsible discharge of a firearms during common practices like hunting, nuisance species control, and target shooting.
