Lawmakers dropped the final gavel on this year’s legislative session late Thursday night. It is always good news for Rhode Islanders when anti-gun politicians go home for the year, but this year was a double dose of good news as several damaging gun control bills failed to advance. The welcome reprieve came despite dozens of anti-gun bills being introduced during the session. Two bills of particular concern included:
S.2710/H.8073 which would have added possession to last year’s semi-auto gun ban. There is no grandfathering, and the legislation creates a felony with harsh penalties. Those who fail to get rid of their guns face a maximum penalty of $10,000 and a 10-year prison sentence.
S.2611 created liability for gun manufacturers despite openly violating the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).
Fortunately, these bills and others did not advance. Only one gun bill passed this session, S.2958a. This bill mandates requirements for gun ranges such as posting of the Suicide hotline number and requiring non-members be accompanied by staff or members. However, rest assured, anti-gun politicians will be back, and unfortunately many of these issues will resurface again in 2027.
We want to thank all Ocean State NRA members who contacted their legislators and made the trip to the Statehouse to oppose these bills when they were being heard in committee. Your action made the difference!
